BUFFALO, NY - The Iona College volleyball team fell in straight sets (18-25,13-25, 21-25) on the road to Canisius on Sunday afternoon. Iona leading 21-20 late in the third, had a chance to extend the match into the fourth set but the Golden Griffins managed to fight back and complete the season sweep against the Maroon & Gold. The Gaels were led by senior outside hitter
Cassandra Patsos who poured in a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.

The Match
Set 1 (18-25)
Trailing 9-5 in the opening set, Iona managed to go on a 5-2 stretch to climb within a point after kills from Patsos and sophomore
Emma Jacobs. Up 13-11, Canisius added to their lead with a 7-1 run, to pull away from the Gaels in the first set. Leading 24-18, Hannah Nelson closed out the set with a kill for the Golden Griffins. Â
Set 2 (13-25)
The beginning of the second set was back-and-forth with both schools exchanging leads. Iona's third lead of the frame came after junior middle blocker
Fleur Wiersma delivered a kill to give the Gaels a 7-6 advantage. Unfortunately for the Gaels, Canisius took control of the set after a 10-1 run to take a 20-10 lead. The Golden Griffins wouldn't look back and leading 24-13, closed out the set on a kill to take a two set lead.
Set 3 (21-25)
Not bowing out easily, the Gaels put together their best offensive set in the third set with a match-best 16 kills with five different players earning a point off a kill. Overcoming deficits of 5-1 and 11-5 Iona continued to fight, thanks to a combined seven kills coming from freshman
Nerin Valasakos and junior
Julia Thomas. After consecutive kills from Patsos and Valasakos, Iona drew even and a couple points later the Gaels took their first lead of the set at 21-20, after an attack error from the Golden Griffins. However, Canisius responded with another timely run and scored five straight points to close out the set and match in three sets.Â
STAT LEADERS
Junior
Samantha Juran and sophomore
Tamara Pichardo combined for 30 of Iona's 33 assist in the loss. It's the third straight match that both players have reached double-figure totals in assist. Defensively sophomore
Hope Matschner recorded a team-high 16 digs on only two receiving errors on the afternoon.
UP NEXT:
Iona continues it's road trip next weekend when they face Saint Peters next Saturday, November 6th. The Gaels will look to complete the season sweep against the Peacocks and snap their current six game skid.
