Iona Men's Water Polo Defeated By St. Francis Brooklyn

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – After being down only two goals 6-4 at the end of the opening period, the Iona men's water polo team managed only six more scores in a 25-10 home North East Water Polo Conference loss to St. Francis College (NY) at Hynes Pool.

GAME SUMMARY

Freshman Luksa Vlasic led the Gaels with four goals, while senior co-captain Justin Ginsberg scored twice. Juniors Lester Machado, Mohamed Refaat, sophomore Andrew Miller and freshman Trippe Bauman added one goal each. The Gaels scored ten goals on 30 shots and made ten assists with three by Machado.

In goal, junior Kyle Laufenberg made eight saves on 24 St. Francis shots with 15 goals against. Sophomore Diego Gomez had eight saves on 17 shots and one steal with ten goals against. On defense, Iona made nine steals with four by Refaat and blocked one shot. Iona drew 20 St. Francis kickouts, while being ejected ten times.  Machado was disqualified with three exclusions. The Gaels turned the ball over 21 times. The Maroon & Gold scored on one of 20 man-up chances, while the Terriers scored seven times on eight chances. 

With 2:12 gone in the match, the Gaels struck first on Vlasic's first score to put the Maroon & Gold up 1-0. The Terriers answered 1:05 later to knot the score at one each with 4:33 left in the opening period. After another goal put the visitors up one 2-1, Machado re-tied the game at two with three minutes left. 

Two straight visitors scores gave St. Francis a 4-2 edge at the 2:11 mark. Vlasic did the same at the other end of the pool to pull the Gaels even with the Terriers at four goals each. In the closing minute, St. Francis scored twice for a 6-4 advantage going into the second period.

The Terriers continued a 4-0 run for an 8-4 lead with 5:46 remaining in the second quarter. Just 1:05 later, Vlasic's fourth score trimmed the visitors' lead to three 8-5 with 4:41 to go. Despite Laufenberg stopping a five-meter penalty shot with 56 ticks left, two more St. Francis scores in the closing 2:53 gave the Terriers a five-goal 10-5 halftime lead.

Ginsburg ended the Gaels offensive drought to pull Iona back within four 10-6 with 46 ticks gone in the third period.  After two straight Terriers scores, Refaat's man-up score closed the gap to six 13-7 with 5:58 on the clock.   

Four St. Francis' goals on consecutive possessions resulted in a 16-7 Terriers edge until Bauman found the back of the net to cut the visitors' cushion back to eight 16-8 with 3:24 to go. The Terriers answered twice in the closing 2:36 for a 18-8 advantage going into the final period. St. Francis outscored Iona 7-2 in the final period to seal the win with Ginsburg and Miller hitting five-meter penalty shots for the Gaels.
