Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Jack Clark

Iona MSOC Defeated by Monmouth on Saturday

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team fell to the Monmouth Hawks 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The Gaels drop to 1-1-2 in league play and look towards next Wednesday's matchup with Quinnipiac to bounce back.

Early chances for Camil Azzam Ruiz and Edu Calvo-Salinas were turned away by Monmouth's Sean Murray. Juan Alfaro Monge, making his second start in net for the Maroon & Gold, watched as a 2nd minute try by Julian Gomez sailed high.

The two sides went nearly 25 minutes without registering a shot before the Hawks' Luke McBeth missed a try out left in the 38th minute. Four minutes later, McBeth missed to the other side of the cage. Gomez came through for the visitors with less than four minutes to play in the half, scoring on an assist from Jonas Lyshoj. The 1-0 lead held as the two sides entered intermission.

Gomez struck again just 2:05 into the second half, curling a right-footed shot into the upper-right corner of the net. His second tally of the afternoon gave Monmouth the 2-0 cushion. Monmouth sat back defensively, making it difficult for the Gaels to operate with much space in the offensive third of the pitch. Still, Iona made its push towards finding goal.

Azzam Ruiz had multiple shots, the best of which made its way past Murray, but was stopped by a Hawk defender. The ball was headed right for the net before it was sent a mile high off the right foot and sailed out of play behind the cage. Off of the ensuing corner, Inigo Zaballa Gonzalez made a great effort, leaving his feet to try a shot with the right foot, but that too headed over the net.

One final try in the waning moments by Azzam Ruiz pinged off of the crossbar and out of the play, as the Gaels could only watch the clock run out on their furious comeback attempt at Mazzella.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Azzam Ruiz finished with a match-high nine shots, one shy of his career best, set on the road at NJIT earlier this season.
  • The Gaels finished with a 15-9 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Murray made four stops, earning the clean sheet, with some help from his backline, for Monmouth. Alfaro Monge made just one save for Iona.
  • Tomas Jamett returned to action for Iona for the first time since September 14, playing all 90 minutes of the match.
