Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jack Clark

Iona WBB Falls to Bucknell on Tuesday

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team was defeated, 55-48, by Bucknell on Tuesday evening at the Hynes Center. Juana Camilion, Isabelle Lipinski and Olivia Vezaldenos all finished in double-figures offensively for the Maroon & Gold in the loss.

The first quarter was back-and-forth between the Gaels and the Bison. Iona ended the period with three straight baskets from Camilion and Vezaldenos, helping the Gaels remain even with the Bison, 12-12, after the opening stanza.

Iona grabbed a 19-12 lead in the early portion of the second quarter, but saw Bucknell tie things up after a 7-0 run that spanned two minutes. Three straight baskets from Ketsia Athias, Lucia Becerra Perez and Vezaldenos staked the Maroon & Gold to a seven-point lead with just under three minutes to play in the half. Bucknell worked its way to the line, trimming the deficit to three points at the halftime break.

Bucknell erased the Iona lead just 90 seconds into the half, grabbing a one-point lead after a free-throw with 8:41 to play in the third. Iona answered with a Lipinski layup to regain the lead on the ensuing possession. The Gaels built the lead to four points, but the Bison battled back, gaining a 34-33 advantage after five consecutive points at the charity stripe. Bucknell went into the final frame with a two-point lead.

Iona re-gained and maintained a lead for the majority of the fourth quarter. A free throw, followed by a basket inside gave Bucknell a three-point lead with less than five minutes to play. Layups from Camilion and Lipinski brought the Gaels within one-point of the lead, but they could never get in front. Bucknell stifled Iona defensively, closing the game out at the free throw line.
