Iona Softball Unveils 2022 Schedule

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College softball head coach Alyssa Tiumalu unveiled the program's 2022 schedule. Tiumalu's first season at the helm features a strong non-conference schedule, featuring four multiple-game tournaments as well as matchups with strong regional opponents prior to league play.

The Maroon & Gold travel to Greenville, South Carolina to begin the campaign, playing in the GVL Showdown hosted by Furman University from February 25-27. Iona plays five games in three days to open the 2022 slate, facing Furman, George Mason and Presbyterian. The following weekend sees the Gaels head to Buies Creek, North Carolina for the Campbell Invitational from March 4-6. Iona takes on Akron, Cleveland State and 2021 NCAA Softball Tournament participant Campbell.

Iona's final stay down south features contests against Mercer and Stetson at the Mercer Bear Classic in Macon, Georgia on March 11-13. The Gaels' last non-conference tournament takes place in Hempstead, New York at Hofstra University from March 18-20. The opponents for Iona's three games are still to be determined.

March comes to a close with non-conference games against Columbia, Binghamton (three-game series) and Fordham. Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play begins as the calendar turns to April, pitting Iona against Monmouth and Rider in doubleheaders during the league's opening weekend of action.

The Gaels mix in a mid-week doubleheader on the road at Sacred Heart before traveling north to face Marist and Siena on April 9 and 10, respectively. The first home contest of the 2022 schedule is slated for April 13, a non-conference doubleheader with Wagner. The Maroon & Gold open the season with 32 straight games away from home before opening play at the Rice Oval. However, Iona will play 15 of its final 18 games in New Rochelle, including non-conference contests with St. John's and Albany.

The defending MAAC Champion Manhattan Jaspers visit Iona for the Gaels' 2022 MAAC home opener on April 16. First-year head coach Alyssa Tiumalu makes her return to Queens to face St. John's for a mid-week contest on April 20. The Maroon & Gold begin a stretch of 11 straight home games on April 23 when they host Niagara. Canisius visits the next day, followed by doubleheaders with Fairfield (April 30), Quinnipiac (May 1) and Albany (May 7). St. John's returns the favor with a mid-week trip to New Rochelle on May 4. The regular season concludes in Jersey City, New Jersey when Iona takes on Saint Peter's.

The 2022 MAAC Tournament runs from May 11-15. The Gaels welcome back three major-award winners from a season prior: Jessica Chilcott (MAAC Player of the Year), Jamie Sheeran (MAAC Rookie of the Year) and Kara Zazzaro (MAAC Pitcher of the Year). Iona added three freshmen to the mix for the upcoming 2022 season, hoping to leave a mark in Tiumalu's inaugural season at the helm of the program.
