Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Garrett Murray

Iona Lacrosse Drops Season Opener At Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - After a 368 day lay off between games, the Iona women's lacrosse program falls to Monmouth, 15-3. Senior Erin O'Donnell led the Gaels on offense with one goal and one assist.

The rest of the Maroon & Gold offense was stone cold with the other two goals coming from Caton Brisbin and Katherine Meyer. As a team Iona got off 24 shots with 17 of them on net. The Gaels were 0-7 on free position shots while the Hawks were able to capitalize on four out of seven free position shots.

GAME SUMMARY

The pre-season favorite jumped out to a 3 goal lead right off the bat, Brisbin would find the back of the net for her first of the campaign with 14:32 left in the first half. Monmouth would score two more, with one coming from a free position shot to make it a 5-1 game.

Captain Erin O'Donnell answered two minutes later with an unassisted goal and cut the deficit to 3 goals. That would be the closest the Gaels would get with the Hawks scoring 5 unanswered goals before the half to take a 10-2 lead at intermission. The second half did not go the Gaels way with Monmouth counting their run with 4 more unanswered goals before Katherine Meyer finally got the team on the board in the second half to make it a 14-3 game with 15:32 left.

Over the next 15 minutes the game would only see one more goal by Monmouth. Elyse Darcy started in net for the Maroon & Gold, the senior made nine saves on 33 shots in the loss. The Gaels picked up 20 ground balls, Madi Kochanek and Darcy picked up three each. Iona also caused five turnovers.
