RIVERDALE, NY – The Iona College men's soccer team fell to 1-2-0 after losing 1-0 at Manhattan on Thursday afternoon. A first-half goal by Oswald Annang accounted for the lone goal of the match.
MATCH SUMMARY
Manhattan applied early pressure on the offensive end, trying three shots before Iona even attempted one of its own. All three of the Jasper tries were blocked, but the fourth one found its way into the back of the net in the 17th minute. Manhattan's Oswald Annang placed it into the upper left corner of the cage after a cross into the box by Lucas Cyriacus. The goal was set up by a foul in Iona's defensive zone.
The Gaels had their first prime chance in the 23rd minute, a header by Ignacio Antequera-Sanchez off of a corner by
Matias Morales that missed wide. Just over a minute later, Manhattan watched as its chance via a corner kick sailed high.
It took until the 41st minute for the Maroon & Gold to test Danny DiMarco, who made the save on a
Lenworth Lopez shot. DiMarco made another stop three minutes later on a try by
Christian Geddes, leading to the end of the first half at Gaelic Park.
It was Iona that had the first try at goal in the second half, a shot by
Camil Azzam Ruiz that was deflected before it reached the net. Manhattan then had a flurry of shots on the other end, four in total, that resulted in nothing. Dottin made one stop and eventually the Jaspers were whistled offsides, ending the threat.
DiMarco made two more saves in the early going, stopping chances for
Tomas Jamett and Azzam Ruiz to keep Iona off the board.
Kendell Thomas headed one towards goal on a feed from Morales that was again stopped by DiMarco.
The Gaels turned up the pressure, vying for an equalizer in the final 15 minutes of action. Iona had three shots at the game-tying goal in the final minute of play, but none of them made it on net. The Manhattan defense cleared the final chance for the Gaels towards midfield and time ran out on the Gaels attempt at forcing overtime for the second straight game.
