Iona Lacrosse Earns First Victory Of 2021 Season Over Niagara

Gaels hold off the late comeback effort from the Purple Eagles to secure the win!

LEWISTON, NY - Iona College women's lacrosse earns their first win of the 2021 season with a 16-13 victory over the Purple Eagles of Niagara. Gaels held off a comeback effort from Niagara after being up 12-6 with 21 minutes left. Senior Madi Kochanek was the big time performer of today's game with a total of 7 points, five goals, two assists on eight shots and six on goal. 

Along with Kochanek seven other Gaels found the back of the net, Emma Rippon notched the golden zombarro, Caton Brisbin scored two of her own. Katherine Meyer, Gabriele Thornton, Erin O'Donnell, Sara Stewart, and Kati Paavola all scored one goal apiece. As a team the Maroon & Gold dished out 8 assists, with three coming from Brisbin.  

The defense stood tall and prevented the Purple Eagles from completing the late second half comeback. In net senior Elyse Darcy posted a .500 save percentage, making 13 saves on 26 shots. The net minder also grabbed two ground balls of the teams 19. 

Sophomore Emily Stewart grabbed a team high three ground balls and secured four big draw controls. Senior Mary Kate Simpson led the Gaels with two caused turnovers. 

GAME SUMMARY

Iona scored two quick goals in the first five minutes of the game, coming from Meyer and O'Donnell. After Niagara got on the board at the 24 minute mark, the Maroon & Gold went on a 3-0 run, goals from Rippon, and Thornton, to take a commanding 5-1 lead. 

The lead would not last long with Niagara going on their own 5-1 run to tie it at 6 with 3:31 left in the first half. With :09 seconds left before half time Madi Kochanek scored her second of the game to give the Gaels a one goal lead at the break. 

Another Iona run was upon us to start the second half, the 5-0 run in the first nine minutes of the second half, with four different goal scorers. The 12-6 lead would not be given up, the Purple Eagles would make it close again after another 4-0 run of their own but Madi Kochanek and Emma Rippon found the back of the net yet again to extend the lead back to 4. 

Niagara would cut their deficit down to two with 8:45 left to play but goals by Kochanek and Rippon to make it 16-12 with 2:41 left to play sealed the victory for the Maroon & Gold. 

UP NEXT

Due to some schedule changes along the MAAC, the games scheduled for Apr. 1 & 3 against Manhattan are now postponed and the next scheduled game for the Gaels is now Apr. 16 against the Stags of Fairfield.
