Iona Women's Lacrosse Drops a High Scoring Contest at Home

An 8-2 run over the last 12 minutes was not enough as the Gael comeback came up just short

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse vs Siena went down to the wire this afternoon on Mazzella Field, with the Saints coming out on top with a 19-18 victory. Emily Stewart and Caton Brisbin led the Gaels on offense, combining for nine goals as the late comeback fell just short. 

Both teams ended the match with 26 shots on goal and with the Gaels collecting nine off free position shots. On defense as a team the Maroon & Gold picked up 13 ground balls, five more than Siena. They also caused five turnovers and were a perfect 15-15 on clears. Iona had eight different players pick up a ground ball with Mary Kate Simpson with two and Junior Gabriele Thornton led with two caused turnovers. 

GAME SUMMARY

The first goal of the came two minutes in, after a penalty by Emma Rippon, Siena was able to capitalize on a man-up and free position opportunity. One minute later, Katherine Meyer found the back on the net for her fifth of the season. The visitors would jump to a two goal lead after capitalizing on another man-up and free position opportunity. Looking at a two goal deficit the Gaels went on a 3-0 run to make it 4-3 in favor of Iona. Three goals came from Thornton and both Emily and Sara Stewart. 

With 15 minutes left in the first half Siena would go on a 4-0 run of their own. Sara Stewart scored her second of the game to end the Saints' run to cut the deficit back down to two with 6:50 left on the clock. The visitors went back on the attack with another 3-0 run to make it a five goal lead. Right before halftime Meyer scored her second of the game off an assist from Brisbin.

The Gaels came out of halftime down 4, both teams would trade goals in the first four minutes to keep the Siena lead at four. The Saints scored two goals just 20 seconds apart to extend their lead to 6, Leah Marshall snuck one past the goalkeeper on a free position shot to make it a 5 goal game. From 21:56 to 12:58 Siena outscored the Maroon & Gold 4-2 and the Gaels climb back became even more steep. 

Iona would not back down as they out scored Siena 8-2 over the last 12 minutes of play. The eight goals came from Emily Stewart, Caton Brisbin, Kati Paavola, Leah Marshall and freshman Alexa Maggiacomo notched her first collegiate goal. Freshman Sydney Danseglio entered the game at 7:51 and kept the Saints off the board for the final 7:51. Bribsin was able to get the Gaels with one with :36 left to play off a free position shot, Iona was unable to secure the final draw and Siena was able to run out the clock for their sixth win of the season.

The Maroon & Gold will be back in action on Friday Apr. 16 against the Stags of Fairfield, game time is scheduled for a 3 pm start.
