Iona Women's Lacrosse Falls to Fairfield

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - A day where the weatherman got it wrong, the Gaels came out slow against the Stags of Fairfield and were unable to overcome the early deficit. Iona failed to score in the first 19 minutes of the first half. The Offense struggled all day as Iona fell 14-6.

Five different Iona Lacrosse players found the back of the net, two from Emily Stewart, and one a piece from Katherine Meyer, Caton Brisbin, Gabirele Thornton, and Megan Collins. In net for the Gaels was Senior Elyse Darcy, the net minder allowed 14 goals on 27 shot =, making nine saves in the loss.

Emily Stewart caused a team high five turnovers and picked up two ground balls. As a team the Gaels picked up 13 ground balls to Fairfields 11.  

GAME SUMMARY

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, but the first 18 minutes belonged all to Fairfield, the stags jumped to a three goal lead and never looked back. Meyer got the Maroon & Gold on the board at the 11:28 mark off a free position shot. Action would pick up over the next three minutes as both teams combined for four more goals.

After the Meyer goal, Fairfield answered 90 seconds later, but Brisbin answered even quicker to keep it a two goal deficit, the Stag scored two quick unanswered goals to make it a 6-2 game. Junior Megan Collins found the back of the net for her first of the season and then she dished out a beautiful assist to Thorton to close the gap to two goals going into halftime.

After a ten minute intermission, the second half belonged to the Stags as well, the scored five unanswered goals in the first eight minutes, Stewart scored her first of the game at the 19 minute mark off a free position shot. Fairfield went on another 3-0 run to make it a nine goal game with 4:40 left to play. Stewart notched her second of the game for the last goal of the game between both teams at the 3:30 mark.

The Maroon & Gold wrap up the weekend with another matchup against the Stags, the game is scheduled to start at 1 pm and will be available to stream on ESPN.
