Iona Women's Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against Fairfield

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona Women's lacrosse program falls to 1-7 after a 16-12 loss to Fairfield earlier this afternoon. The Gaels offense fell short of a come back as the Stags defense stepped up big time in the whining minutes. 

Iona was led on offense by seven different goal scorers, Emily Stewart scored a team high three goals, with Megan Collins, Caton Brisbin, and Alexa Maggiacomo with two a piece and Madi Kochanek, Sara Stewart, and Gabriele Thornton scored one goal each. 

On defense Elyse Darcy got the start in net for the Gaels, she allowed 15 goals and made 4 saves. Freshman Sydney Danseglio entered the game at the 11:58 minute mark, the Connetquot graduate allowed one goal and three saves. As a team the Gaels picked up 12 ground balls and caused eight turnovers with freshman Alexa Skoubas leading the way with three. 

GAME SUMMARY

Fairfield got on the board first at the 28:13 minute mark, but Brisbin got the Gaels on the board nearly 50 ticks later off an assist from Collins. The Stags scored two unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead seven minutes in. Iona answered with two of their own from Collins and Brisbin to knot it up at three apiece. Fairfield capitalized on a man up opportunity but the Maroon & Gold answered 70 seconds later by a goal Collins second goal of the game to keep it tied at 4-4.

The Stags broke it wide open after scoring four unanswered goals after the under 20 minute media timeout to make it a four goal deficit for the Gaels. Sara Stewart found the back of the net for her fifth of the season, it was the Maroon & Gold's last goal of the first half.

Looking at a four goal deficit, Iona surrendered two more to make it a six goal game with 25 minutes left to play. Thornton notched her only goal of the game to keep it a five goal lead for the Stags. Fairfield went on another 3-0 run to take a commanding eight goal lead with 20 minutes left to play. 

Over the last 19 minutes to play the Gaels outscored the Stags 6-2, Emily scored her three goals of the game in the last 19 minutes. Fairfield was able to hold off the Iona comeback as they picked up big draw controls and caused multiple turnovers in the final four minutes.

The Gaels are back in action against the Jaspers of Manhattan on Wednesday Apr. 21 for a 3 pm start.
