Iona Lacrosse Loses Week Day Contest To Manhattan

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The MAAC competition between Iona and Manhattan got off to a late start due to a lighting delay which delayed the start of the game today to 3:30 pm. After the weather delay the visitors jumped to an early lead and did not look back, taking the afternoon match, 17-10.

The Maroon & Gold were led on offense by senior Sara Stewart, who accounted for half of the Gaels goals. The rest of the goal scorers were two by Amber Brewster, one by Katherine Meyer, Leah Marshall, and freshman Alexa Maggiacomo. As a team Iona took 36 shots with 26 of them on net. The Maroon & Gold assisted on five of ten goals with Brewster leading the way with two.

On defense, senior goalkeeper Elyse Darcy got the start, she allowed 17 goals on 33 shots while making 12 saves. Both teams picked up 18 ground balls with Iona controlling nine more draws than the Jaspers. Darcy and Stewart both picked up a team high three ground balls and Emily Stewart led the team with two caused turnovers.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona failed to find the back of the net in the first 12 minutes of the game, the Jaspers found the back of the net 4 times in that span to take a four goal lead. A lead that they would lose all game. The first goal of the game was Sara Stewart's first of her five off an assist from Megan Collins. The cross town rivals went on another 3-0 run to take a commanding 7-2 lead with 11:09 to play in the first half.

The Maroon & Gold answered with a 3-0 run of their own the first goal came from Stewart at the 9:20 mark, the second goal came from freshman Maggiacomo at the 8:31 and Leah Marshall scored her tenth of the year off a beautiful feed from Amber Brewster at the 8:08 mark. With the Manhattan lead cut to three, their top goal scorer found another one to extend the lead to four but Stewart notched her hat trick a minute later to keep the deficit at three. With 3:15 left to play in the first half Manhattan extended their lead back to five. Brewster scored her first goal of the season with :55 seconds until the break.

After a quick ten minute halftime break, Manhattans own Grace Lipponer took over, she scored four of the jaspers seven goals in the second half. She extended the Jasper lead to five at 25:51. Iona kept it a four goal game at 23:43 after Stewart found the back of the net for her fourth time. Once again the Green & White kept it just out of reach of the Gaels.

Goals by Brewster and Meyer were able to get the Gaels within three with 16:37 left to play, but Manhattan went on their biggest run of the afternoon, 5-0 and made it a 17-9 game with 5:23 left to play. Madi Kochanek assisted on Stewarts fifth and last goal of the day with :33 let in the game. Manhattan won the final draw and were able to run out the final seconds to secure the victory, 17-10.
