WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Iona College women's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak with a 55-48 victory over Monmouth on Thursday evening.
Ketsia Athias,
Juana Camilion and
Jenae Dublin all finished in double figures in the win over the Hawks.
GAME SUMMARY
Despite yet another shutdown and 15 days in between games, the Gaels looked as good as ever in the opening stanza. Iona was responsible for 17 of the first 19 points in the game and led 19-3 after the first 10 minutes of action.
Iona jumped out to an immediate 7-0 lead with a pair of baskets from Camilion and another from Dublin. Jen Louro got the Hawks on the board just under four minutes into the game, but it would be Monmouth's only made field goal of the first period. The Gaels scored 12 of the next 13 points, including 10 straight. The Maroon & Gold allowed just one made field goal on 10 attempts by the home team.
The Hawks played much better to begin the second quarter, scoring four times in the opening five minutes. Belle Kranbuhl's layup with 5:36 to play in the period put Monmouth into double digits.
Hannah King buried a three pointer on the ensuing possession to put the Gaels in front 27-11. The Hawks pulled to within 14 points, 32-18, thanks to a last-second basket from Jania Hall.
Iona managed to maintain a double-figure lead for the first seven minutes of action in the third quarter. Monmouth's Jen Louro capped a 7-0 run for the Hawks with their first trifecta of the evening, trimming Iona's lead to 38-29. Back-to-back field goals from Camilion and Dublin put the Gaels ahead by 14 again and they would carry a 42-30 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was the highest scoring frame of the evening. Just like in the prior period, Monmouth used a 7-0 spurt to cut into Iona's double-figure lead. Sakeria Haralson's layup with 4:58 to play made it a 49-41 game. Camilion answered the bell once more, ending Iona's two-plus minute scoring drought and making it a double-digit affair once again.
Over the final two minutes of regulation, the Hawks dwindled the Gael lead to five points, 53-48, but would not close the gap any further. Monmouth did not record a made field goal over the final 3:40. Camilion iced the game at the free throw line, propelling Iona to its first win since New Years Day in Buffalo.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Camilion led all scorers with 19 points. The junior made six-of-nine from the field, including three of her six attempts from three-point land.

- Athias and Haralson led their teams with eight rebounds apiece. Dublin and Kranbuhl corralled seven boards each.

NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Dublin got the starting nod tonight and scored seven first-half points after playing seven scoreless minutes against Fairfield in Iona's last game. She finished with new career highs in points (15), field goals made (7), steals (4) and minutes played (31). Her four blocks matched her career best.
- Camilion's has now scored 10 or more points in 10 of the Gaels' 13 contests this season. She has led the team in scoring in six games this season.
- Athias scored 12 points on six made field goals, both matched season-bests for the junior transfer playing in her fourth game. She has started in three straight contests.
- The three aforementioned players combined for 46 of Iona's 55 points and 19-of-22 field goals.
- As a team, Iona shot 41% (22-54) from the field. The Gaels move to 3-1 this season in games where they shoot above 40 percent.
- Iona's defense held Monmouth to 1-9 (11%) shooting from three. All three marks (makes, attempts and percentage) are season lows for an Iona opponent.
- The Gaels outrebounded the Hawks 35-31, marking just the fourth time this season Iona has done so. The Maroon & Gold are 2-2 in those contests.
- Iona turned the ball over 20 times, compared to Monmouth's 18 total giveaways. Tonight's victory marks Iona's first this season (1-6) when losing the turnover battle.
- A victory tomorrow would propel Iona into sixth place in the standings. A loss would lock the Gaels into the No. 8 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
