LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Iona College men's soccer team saw its 2020-21 season come to a close in the MAAC Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon. The Gaels lost 4-1 at No. 2 Rider under rainy conditions at Ben Cohen Field in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
MATCH SUMMARY
Things got going quickly on Sunday, with Rider's Pablo DeCastro, Taner Bay and Francisco Gomez Olano sending shots towards
Azal Dottin in the opening minutes of action. All three of the shots missed the target.
Christian Geddes, getting the start again on Iona's backline, tried the first shot of the afternoon for the Gaels, sending it over the crossbar and out of bounds. There was a slight lull in the action until the 20th minute when Guillermo Pavia Vidal broke the scoreless tie by tucking one into the upper left corner of the net.
Following the goal, Iona maintained and controlled possession of the ball for a while, but had little to show for it in the stat sheet.
Josh Plimpton had Iona's second shot of the match in the 25th minute, but it never made its way on net. It would be Iona's last shot of the first half.
Unfortunately for Iona, the Broncs were not yet finished scoring in the opening 45 minutes. A foul inside the box awarded Rider with a penalty kick, which DeCastro took and blasted past a diving Dottin, who guessed the correct direction but could not stop the shot. Rider now led 2-0 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half.
The score remained the same as the match transitioned into the second half. Rider would add to its lead in the 64th minute when DeCastro turned and fired a right-footed shot into the upper right corner of the net, leaving Dottin with little chance to make a save.
Down, but not yet out, Iona got on the board and cut into the deficit in the 78th minute.
Esad Mackic netted his first goal of the season, unassisted, to make it a 3-1 game with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
Matias Morales had a decent chance to cut further into the deficit in the 87th minute, taking a shot off of a free kick chance just outside the box, but Pablo Gatinois made the save.
Rider transitioned down the other end of the pitch, scoring a fourth goal, putting the game completely out of reach in the final minute. The No. 7 seeded Gaels were officially bounced from the postseason with the loss.
