NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Boston College handed Iona a 5-0 loss in the 2021 season opener at Mazzella Field on Thursday afternoon. The Gaels battled through a tough opening 45 minutes of play, heading into the break down two goals, but could never get anything going offensively.
The Eagles outshot the Maroon & Gold 23-5 in the contest, which included a 15-2 margin in the second half. Iona goalkeepers

Sam Rom combined to make eight stops in net during the match.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Havrilla started in goal for Iona, playing 66 minutes and stopping six shots. She allowed three of Boston College's five goals and was saddled with the loss in the season opener.
- Rom relieved Havrilla, making two saves.
- As a team, Iona finished with five shots, four of which were on net.
- Emily Drake had a team-high two shots. Beyonce Williams, Graceann Murphy and Kiera Haggerty had the others.
- Boston College finished with 11 corner kick opportunites. The Maroon & Gold did not have one.
- Newcomers Kedarjah Lewis, Sam Rom, Niki Kassimatis, Beyonce Williams, Katie Menard, Sofia Banegas and Mia Lopez all made their collegiate debuts for Iona.
- Sophomore Madison Lennon also made her Maroon & Gold debut, earning the start in the midfield for the Gaels.
