LEXINGTON, VA - The Iona College women's soccer team emerged victorious over VMI on Thursday afternoon, topping the Keydets 4-3 at Patchin Field. Freshman
Kedarjah Lewis scored back-to-back goals in the second half to propel the Gaels to their second-straight win.
Sophomores Emily Drake and Graceann Murphy combined to get things going on Thursday, with Drake heading home a perfectly-placed pass from a corner kick opportunity by Murphy in the 19th minute. Junior transfer Beyonce Williams joined in on the fun in the 26th minute, scoring her first goal of the season to push Iona ahead 2-0. Sophomore Kayla Thomas had the assist on Williams' goal.
The Maroon & Gold carried the two-goal advantage into the second half, but watched it disappear in a (roughly) six-minute span in which the Keydets netted three unanswered goals. The first two goals came during a 36-second span; the go-ahead goal found twine 6:02 later, forcing Sam Rom to replace Emma Havrilla in Iona's net.
The resilient Gaels regained a lead on the strength of two goals from Lewis however, and the lead held throughout the remainder of regulation. Murphy had the assist on both of Lewis' goals, the first points of the Higganum, Connecticut native's collegiate career.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Murphy's three assists account for an individual single-game record according to Iona's recorded program history. The points were the first of the sophomore's career.
- Drake's goal was the first goal and two points of her collegiate career.
- Williams' goal was her first as a member of the Maroon & Gold and Thomas' assist was her first career point.
- Lewis became the second Gael this season to record multiple goals in a game, joining teammate Faith Preziosi, who scored twice in Iona's victory at St. Bonaventure last Sunday afternoon.
- Iona's four goals are its most in a single game since October 7, 2015 when the Gaels defeated Fairfield 4-3 on the road.
- As a team, the Maroon & Gold totaled 12 points in the win, their most since amassing 12 in a 4-2 road win over Albany on September 5, 2014.
