Iona Volleyball Sweeps Merrimack To Open 2021 Season

WEST POINT, NY - The Iona College volleyball team opened up the 2021 season with a resounding three-set sweep of Merrimack in the first of three matches at the Army Invitational. Alessandra Brady, Cassandra Patsos and Kiarra Roth led the way offensively, combining for 36 of Iona's 45 kills.

Iona jumped out to an 8-3 lead early in the first set, though Merrimack managed to trim its deficit to just three after back-to-back kills. The Gaels' lead grew to as large as 10 points midway through the opening set, 17-7, after an ace from Julia Thomas. The Maroon & Gold closed out the first set without much resistance, winning 25-13 on an ace by Roth.

Set two was back-and-forth for much of the early stages. The two sides were deadlocked at 5-5 before Iona scored seven of the next eight points to stake itself to a 12-6 advantage. Merrimack pulled within three points of the lead on two separate occasions down the stretch, the latest of which made it a 17-14 advantage for the Gaels. The Maroon & Gold took the next four points however, forcing a timeout. Iona would then cruise to a 25-19 second-set victory at Gillis Field House.

The Warriors held an early lead in set number three, but the Gaels scored four straight to regain an 8-6 lead. Merrimack tied it multiple times down the stretch, eventually staking itself to a 13-12 lead. The Maroon & Gold put the final nail in the coffin by scoring 12 unanswered points and force match point. Patsos secured the final kill of the afternoon and the Gaels swept the Warriors to kick off 2021.

The Gaels return to action tomorrow when they face Providence at 2:30 p.m. and Army at 6:00 p.m. at Gillis Field House. Iona's match against Army will be streamed live on ESPN+.
