Iona VB Drops Contest In Straight Sets Against Seton Hall

NEW YORK, NY - The Iona College volleyball team fell in straight sets to Seton Hall in the opening game of the Big Apple Invitational on Friday. Cassandra Patsos led the way offensively for the Maroon & Gold, finishing with a team-high eight kills.

Set one was tied early on with neither side able to grab a sizable advantage, until Seton Hall scored four straight points to take a 12-8 lead. Iona trimmed it to 13-10, but another 4-0 run for the Pirates put the Gaels in a tough spot. The Maroon & Gold fell behind 21-12, but showed some resiliency by scoring the next four points. Three straight for Seton Hall provided them with set point, which Iona fought off once, but the Pirates eventually took set one, 25-17.

Seton Hall jumped out to a 10-0 advantage to begin set two. The Maroon & Gold trimmed the deficit to six points on three different occasions after the rough start, but never got closer, dropping the second set by a score of 25-15.

The Pirates took command early in set three as well, building up an early four-point lead that grew to seven later on. The Gaels pulled within four points again late in the set, 22-18, but Seton Hall scored three of the next four points to complete the sweep.

Iona wraps up play at the Big Apple Invitational tomorrow afternoon with a pair of matches against Columbia and St. Francis Brooklyn. The Gaels and Lions get going at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+. Following the conclusion of that match, the Maroon & Gold will face the Terriers.
