Iona WSOC Earns Shutout Win Over Cornell

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer moved to 3-3 overall with a 1-0 victory over Cornell on Sunday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Freshman Kedarjah Lewis' team-leading third goal of the season was the decisive one in the shutout win over the Big Red.

The lone goal of the afternoon came in the 31st minute when Mackenzie Meixner played a ball into the center of the box off of a free kick. Lewis headed a perfect ball past Miranda Iannone, never giving the keeper a chance, and breaking an early scoreless tie.

The Gaels had opportunities to build upon its lead, primarily Faith Preziosi on two separate occasions, but her shots sailed just wide. Defensively, the Maroon & Gold held its own and held the Big Red off of the scoresheet for the full 90 minutes.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Lewis scored her third goal of the season and now has the team lead in that category. She sits right behind teammate Graceann Murphy (seven points) for the team high in points.
  • Emma Havrilla moved to 3-3 on the season with the win, recording her first clean sheet since October 19, 2019 against Quinnipiac.
  • Havrilla's three wins match her career high, set twice before in 2018 and 2019.
  • Meixner's assist was the fifth of her career and her first point of the season.
  • The Gaels avenged a 2019 loss to Cornell, evening the series history with the Big Red at a game apiece.
  • Preziosi finished with a game-high four shots and two shots on goal. Sophomore Kayla Thomas also registered two shots on net.
  • Cornell finished with an 11-9 advantage in the shots department, but Iona had six chances at goal compared to just two for Cornell.
