NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team won its second straight contest, defeating Delaware State 2-0 on Thursday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Sophomores
Emily Drake and
Graceann Murphy scored Iona's goals while freshman keeper
Sam Rom earned the victory, the first of her collegiate career.
Iona started fast, scoring the first goal of the match just 16 seconds into play. Drake buried a shot after a cross into the box from Faith Preziosi was touched off to Drake by Samantha Hogan. The goal was the third of the season for Drake, moving her into a tie with Kedarjah Lewis for the team lead in goals scored.
The Gaels absolutely dominated the opening 45 minutes, amassing 15 shots while not allowing one by the Hornets. Eriona Shabani made four stops in the opening stanza and the score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.
Murphy then struck in the 56th minute to pad Iona's lead. Preziosi had the initial shot towards the net that Shabani stopped, but the rebound came out to Murphy who directed it into the back of the cage with her right foot. Murphy's tally was her third of the year, joining Drake and Lewis in a three-way tie for the team lead in goals.
Freshman Caroline Scott started the second half for the Gaels, making two stops on both of the Hornets' shots in the final 45 minutes. Freshman Beth Arnold finished things out for the Maroon & Gold, who moved to 4-3-0 overall this season.
