Iona WSOC Suffers 2OT Loss in MAAC Opener at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - The Iona College women's soccer team lost 2-1 in double overtime to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon. Kiera Haggerty's 86th minute goal knotted the score at one and forced extra time between the Hawks, who were selected to finish first in the 2021 MAAC Preseason Poll, and the Gaels.

Monmouth led for a majority of regulation after Jill Conklin netted the game's first goal a little over 13 minutes into play. Her right-footed shot beat Emma Havrilla and put Iona in an early hole. The score held all the way until the final five minutes. Freshman Kedarjah Lewis moved past a defender and fed a pass to Andrea Ferrer rushing towards the box. Ferrer then threaded a pass through the defense and onto the foot of Haggerty, who guided it into the back of the cage to force overtime.

Neither side capitalized in the first 10 minutes of extra time, though Iona had a wonderful chance with Lewis in alone on the keeper. The bouncing ball never settled for Lewis, who managed to force a chance from the corner for the Maroon & Gold, but it amounted to nothing.

Just under four minutes into the second overtime period Ava Allen re-directed a pass from Jesi Rossman in and ended the match.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Haggerty's goal was her first of the season and the third of her career. She now has three points this season.
  • Ferrer, who was credited with the assist on the game-tying goal, now has three points as well this season. The helper was her first of the year and the fifth of her career.
  • Monmouth finished with a healthy 19-5 advantage in shots, as well as a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • Havrilla made five saves, one shy of her season-high in the season opener against Boston College.

AROUND THE MAAC

  • Siena topped Rider 2-1 in overtime at Hickey Field in Loudonville.
  • Marist and Fairfield played to a 1-1 draw in Poughkeepsie.
  • Manhattan outlasted Canisius 2-1 at Demske Sports Complex.
