BUFFALO, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team notched a 1-0 win over Canisius on Saturday afternoon at Demske Sports Complex.
Faith Preziosi scored the lone goal of the match in the fourth minute, while big plays from Iona's backline and
Emma Havrilla combined to keep the Griffs off board.
A set piece early on from Mackenzie Meixner placed a ball on the foot of Preziosi, who turned and fired a shot that ricocheted off of the post and into the back of the net. The goal would prove to be the game winner for the Maroon & Gold.Â
Canisius had a multitude of tries in the opening 45 minutes, though Iona held strong. Kelsie Kearns and Taylor D'Alessandro both had a hand (or perhaps more appropriately, a body) in keeping Canisius out of the back of the net. On one scramble inside the box both Kearns and D'Alessandro made stops behind Havrilla on the goal line. Havrilla eventually corralled the ball to mitigate the danger. Later on, Kearns got a head on a ball and cleared the danger again from Iona's goal line.
Despite the advantage in shots for the Griffs in the opening 45 minutes of play, the Gaels held a 1-0 lead at the break. Iona had the edge in shots in half number two, applying constant pressure in search of a second goal. More importantly however, the Maroon & Gold kept Canisius off of the score sheet entirely en route to their first conference victory of the 2021 season.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Preziosi's goal was her third of the season, moving her into sole possession of the team lead in points (10).
- Havrilla finished with five saves, one shy of her season best, earning her fourth win in net. Her fourth win marks a career-best in a single season for the senior keeper.
- The shutout was Iona's third of the season and the second straight for Havrilla. Iona has conceded two goals across its last four matches, both of which came in the double-overtime loss at Monmouth last weekend.
- The Gaels defeated Canisius in Buffalo for the first time since the 2005 season. Entering this year, Iona was 0-2-5 on the road at Canisius dating back to 2007.
- Since being shutout in the season-opener versus Boston College, the Gaels have registered at least a goal in eight straight contests.
