NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team lost its conference home-opener, 1-0, against Manhattan on Wednesday. Amrit Arora's tally was the difference maker for the visiting Jaspers at Mazzella Field.
The Gaels dominated possession early on, creating multiple chances on the offensive end in the opening 25 minutes, but could not convert. Samantha Hogan, Kedarjah Lewis and Kelsie Kearns all had chances, but Kim Mains stopped two of the three. The only chance she did not get a piece of was off the foot of Lewis. The freshman had a try inside the box after a cross, but did not get a good shot off with her right foot, shanking it right and out of play.
Arora was part of a couple subs on both sides in the 30th minute, paying almost immediate dividends. A cross towards the middle came off of an Iona player and re-directed towards the freshman, who buried a right-footed shot past Emma Havrilla to open the scoring.
The Maroon & Gold had the final shot of the first half, which came off the foot of Emily Drake that Mains saved. Manhattan held a one-goal advantage at the conclusion of the first 45 minutes, scoring on its only shot on goal.
The second half began with another flurry of shots by the Gaels, but again they had nothing to show for it. Graceann Murphy and Andrea Ferrer both missed the cage on solid chances. Faith Preziosi forced Mains to make another stop in the 57th minute, quieting the Iona attack for the moment. Kiera Haggerty was stopped by Mains about seven minutes later.
A couple of corners for Iona with just over 17 minutes to play led to a pair of shots; the best look came from Madison Lennon, but it missed much too high. The Gaels had three chances at net in the closing 10 minutes, but Mains was up to task as she was all day, shutting down the Iona attack and solidifying the shutout for the visitors.

- Manhattan's goal was the first allowed by Havrilla at home since the season opener on August 19, a streak that spanned 128-plus minutes.

- Manhattan has now won six of the last seven matchups between the two programs. The Gaels last defeated the Jaspers back in 2014, a 1-0 win on Mazzella.
