Iona MSOC Shutouts Sacred Heart on Wednesday Afternoon

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The Gaels secured their first clean sheet of the season and used goals from Camil Azzam Ruiz and Lenworth Lopez to cruise to their first home win of the 2021 season.

Iona applied pressure from the get-go on Wednesday; a couple of early chances from Lopez nearly got the Maroon & Gold on the board in the opening 10 minutes, but Justin Siegel turned away a good try by Lopez. The second chance sailed off the head of Lopez and over the cage. Iona's first corner nearly found twine, but Lopez's third shot of the afternoon missed wide. 

Azzam Ruiz would convert in the 22nd minute, beating Siegel to the lower right corner. Lopez took away a pass in the offensive third, headed down the far side of the field and centered a pass that Azzam Ruiz settled and buried. The Gaels had another solid chance on a set piece a few minutes later that Tim Timchenko curled just wide of the corner of the net.

Iona's 1-0 lead would hold heading into the second half, limiting Sacred Heart to just one shot in the opening 45 minutes. The Pioneers' best chance was whistled offside, though Zachary Nelson was there to stop it.

Lopez put the match to rest with an 87th minute goal on a long feed from Thiago Cagna. The ball came off the head of a Sacred Heart defender who then fell and gave Lopez a free lane towards the box. Lopez grounded a shot towards the left corner that came just off the hand of Siegel and found the back of the net. With the comfort of the two-goal lead, Iona held off Sacred Heart for the final three-and-a-half minutes to secure the victory.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Azzam Ruiz's goal was his team-leading fourth of the season and his third in two games. He also now has a team-high nine points.
  • Lopez has now scored in three straight contests and sits just behind Azzam Ruiz with three goals and eight points this year.
  • Nelson registered his first shutout as a member of the Maroon & Gold, stopping the only shot that he faced this afternoon.
  • Cagna had the assist on Lopez's goal, the first point of the sophomore's career.

UP NEXT

Iona hits the road to wrap up non-conference play this Saturday night, facing Columbia at 7:00 p.m. at Rocco B. Commisso Stadium.
