Iona MSOC Loses In Overtime At Navy

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Iona College men's soccer team dropped a road contest to the United States Naval Academy on Friday evening, 2-1, in overtime. Camil Azzam Ruiz's first goal of the season in the 82nd minute forced extra time, but the Midshipmen prevailed by virtue of a penalty-kick goal in the 98th minute.

The Gaels weathered the storm for the majority of regulation. Navy held a 10-2 edge in shots at the conclusion of the first half, though only one of those was on goal. Zach Nelson, the starting keeper for the Maroon & Gold, made one save in the opening 45 minutes.

The Midshipmen broke through in the 56th minute on a goal by JD Wagner. Nelson had added two more saves in net before allowing the first goal of the match. The Iona backline and Nelson endured eight more shots and three corner kick opportunities, but held strong, allowing the offense to respond. Azzam Ruiz did that, finding the equalizer with less than 10 minutes to play.

Tomas Jamett had the first shot of the first half, forcing a save from Tyler Fahning in the first minute of the first overtime period. The Maroon & Gold had their first and only corner of the match just minutes later, but could not convert. A foul in the box set the Midshipmen up for a penalty kick, which David Jackson buried, propelling the hosts to a 2-1 victory.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Azzam Ruiz's goal was his first of the season and the team's first. He now has three goals in nine career matches since joining the Maroon & Gold last season.
  • Navy held an edge in shots (25-6), shots on goal (5-2) and corners (10-1).
  • The 25 shots by the Midshipmen are the most by an Iona opponent since Boston University had 25 against the Gaels on August 31, 2014.
  • Six Gaels were issued yellow cards on Friday evening. Iona was whistled for 16 fouls, while Navy committed 12.
  • 21 members of the Maroon & Gold saw action on the pitch. Navy used just three subs in the 97-plus minutes of play.
