NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University women's soccer team lost, 2-0, to Siena on Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Prior to today's match, Iona head coach
Todd Plourde and his staff honored Iona's three seniors:
Sofia Giamanco,
Kiera Haggerty and
Samantha Hogan.
MATCH SUMMARY
A back-and-forth first half of action at Mazzella Field saw chances on both sides of the pitch, but neither team could find the back of the net. Siena had arguably the best chances, though Emma Havrilla and the Iona defense did enough to stymie the Saints' attack in the opening 45 minutes of action. Late first-half entries into the match by freshmen Brooke Delsignore and Zaheira Hegazi gave Iona some good minutes late, providing the Maroon & Gold with some momentum heading into the halftime intermission.
Iona had shots from Haggerty and Giamanco stopped in the opening minutes of the second half, before Siena would open the scoring. A corner kick for the Saints saw the service from Cora Keohane headed home by Grace Dimkopoulos in the 60th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Following the Siena score, Iona had shots from Mackenzie Meixner, Gabby Dellocono, Giamanco and Kayla Thomas all miss the target or be stopped by Angela Fini. Havrilla made a pair of saves to keep Iona in it for a moment, but an 81st minute goal would put the Gaels away. The 2-0 deficit was too much for the Maroon & Gold to overcome in the final 10 minutes of play.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Iona's offense held an edge in shots, 15-10, though Siena was more efficient with its chances, holding a narrow 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Gaels had 13 corner kicks, its most in a single match since registering 14 in a 2-0 victory over Saint Peter's on September 24, 2016.
- Havrilla made five saves in the loss, one less than Siena's Fini.
- Iona falls to 5-20-2 all-time against Siena. The Gaels have lost 12 consecutive matches to the Saints, last picking up a victory back in 2013.
