STONY BROOK, NY - The Iona University women's basketball team lost to Stony Brook, 73-71, on Monday evening at Island Federal Arena. The Gaels led by as many as 26 points in the contest, but were outscored 47-28 in the second half and were outlasted by the Seawolves.
THE RUNDOWN
Iona picked up right where it left off in the season opener, racing out to an early 18-point advantage after the first quarter. The Gael offense was clicking on all cylinders, coupled with tenacious defense that forced the Seawolves into five turnovers and limited Stony Brook to just eight points and a three-of-fifteen mark from the floor. Juana Camilion outscored Stony Brook all on her own in the first quarter, tallying 10 points. She added three assists, including setting up Kate Mager on both of her trifectas.
The second quarter was much of the same, though Stony Brook began to find its sea legs. Back-to-back layups from Camilion extended Iona's lead to 26 points, but the Seawolves managed to whittle the deficit down to 14 points after a 12-0 run. The Maroon & Gold limited Stony Brook to just one basket over the final three minutes of the half, rolling into the half with a 43-26 advantage.
Annie Warren took matters into her own hands to begin the second half, scoring the first eight points of the period to bring the Seawolves back within single digits. Warren's individual run kick-started a 47-point second half by Stony Brook, culminating with the Seawolves erasing a 26-point deficit and securing a two-point win in dramatic fashion.
Iona lost Camilion at the 3:19 mark of the fourth quarter, where she picked up her fifth foul of the evening. The Gaels were holding onto a one-point lead at the time of Camilion's untimely departure. Iona's narrow advantage held for another two-plus minutes before Sherrice Pittman made the front end of a pair of free throws to even the contest at 69-69. The second free throw missed, leading to an offensive rebound and another foul. Narimar Vargas connected on both to put the Gaels behind for the first time in the game. The Maroon & Gold trailed for just 25 seconds before Athias scored inside to tie it with 50 seconds to play. An offensive rebound and putback by Pittman put Stony Brook back in front with six seconds remaining. Athias would miss the game-tying shot inside in the final moments, sealing Iona's fate on Monday evening.
