Berrick JeanLouis poured in a career-high 23 points and junior
Daniss Jenkins added 20 to lead the Gaels to an impressive 71-50 win over America East Conference favorite Vermont at the 2022 Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase at Mohegan Sun Arena. Iona scored on its first possession, 22 seconds into the game, and never trailed in the victory.
THE RUNDOWN
Iona scored the first seven points of the contest and opened a double-digit lead at the 14:25 mark on a JeanLouis jumper from just inside the three-point line that made the score 16-6. The Maroon & Gold led by as many as 15 points in the frame at 23-8 on a Jenkins bucket at 10:31. A 12-2 run from the Catamounts cut the Gaels lead to five with 5:37 remaining. Five straight points gave the Gaels a 30-20 lead less than a minute later. The margin was nine points at the halfway point.

A 9-0 run by Iona over a 2:30 span seven minutes into the second half put Iona ahead by 17 points with 10:54 to play. Iona extended the run to 19-4 and led by 20 with 5:32 to play. Vermont got as close as 14 with 2:11 on the clock before Iona scored the final seven points of the contest.
IONA PERFOMRERS
- JeanLouis shot 10-for-12 from the field including a perfect 8-for-8 from inside the arc. He added five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block in 32 minutes of play. JeanLouis eclipsed his previous career-high with 17 first half points in the win.
- Jenkins had his third Division I 20+ point effort and first as a Gael. He shot 8-for-18 with two three pointers while adding a team-high eight rebounds with three assists and a steal.
- Sophomore Walter Clayton scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half. He posted seven rebounds and three assists and three steals.
- Junior Nelly Junior Joseph added eight points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
THE OPPONENT
- Dylan Penn led the Catamounts with 10 points with eight coming in the first half and was the lone Vermont player with a double-digit effort.
- Robin Duncan posted a game-high nine rebounds.
TEAM STATS
- Iona out shot Vermont 49.2%-42.0%. The Gaels converted 6-of-22 (27.3%) of their three-point attempts while holding its opponent to 2-of-12 (16.7%) from long distance.
- The Catamounts held a 34-31 edge on the boards, but the Maroon & Gold led 10-6 on second chance points.
- The Gaels had 11 assists and nine turnovers, a third straight single-digit turnover effort to start the season. Vermont had eight assists and 17 turnovers.
UP NEXT
Following the Thanksgiving holiday, the Gaels head West to the Las Vegas Showcase to take on Santa Clara. The contest is a midnight tip-off on the East Coast on Sunday, November 27 (9 p.m. local time, 11/26).
