QUEENS, NY - The Iona University women's basketball team lost to St. John's, 77-51, on Thursday evening inside Carnesecca Arena.
Ketsia Athias finished with a team-high 16 points for the Maroon & Gold.
THE RUNDOWN
Iona hung tough early on, matching St. John's effort offensively in the opening couple of minutes. A Juana Camilion basket after a turnover by the Red Storm put Iona in front 8-6 two minutes in, but St. John's would take control from that point moving forward. The Red Storm scored 15 of the next 17 points and took a 21-10 lead. Iona managed just five points on two baskets over the final eight minutes of the opening stanza.
St. John's led by as many as 19 in the first half, eventually padding the lead to 23 points by the end of the third quarter. In the second half, Iona's Vega Lopez and Petra Oborilova both registered the first points of their Division I collegiate careers. The Maroon & Gold could never weather the "Red Storm", succumbing to St. John's on Thursday night.
