Iona SB Drops A Pair In Season-Opening Tournament

GREENVILLE, SC - The Iona College softball team opened up the 2022 season at the GVL Showdown against Presbyterian and George Mason on Friday. The Gaels fell 1-0 in the opener to Presbyterian and 6-0 at the hands of George Mason.

GAME ONE: PRESBYTERIAN 1, IONA 0

The opening game of the season for the Maroon & Gold was a pitcher's duel, seeing Kara Zazzaro and Jenna Greene go the distance and rack up double-digit strikeouts. The lone blemish on Zazzaro's line was an unearned run by virtue of a walk, a stolen base and a passed ball.

Zazzaro cruised through the Presbyterian lineup for the first five innings. The senior pitcher from Southington, Connecticut set down 11 of the first 12 batters to come to the dish, stranding runners in scoring position in the top of the third and fourth innings.

Offensively, Iona managed a pair of hits, one in the first by Natalia Meray and another in the fourth by Emma Capuano. Jamie Sheeran, who walked earlier in the fourth inning, moved into scoring position on the Capuano base hit. Hannah Collins was set down on strikes to end the threat.

Presbyterian put runners on second and third to begin the sixth inning after a walk, a single and a pair of stolen bases. Zazzaro would retire the next two hitters on grounders, but a passed ball allowed a run to score. After a walk, Zazzaro escaped the frame with a strikeout.

The Gaels best chance at tying things up was in the final frame. Collins drew a walk and gave way to a pinch runner, Haley Weaver, with the Maroon & Gold down to their final out. Presbyterian's Jenna Greene finished what she started by retiring Allie Taylor to end the game.

GAME TWO: GEORGE MASON 6, IONA 0

Meray started game two the same way she did game one, with a first-inning single. The two-out single amounted to nothing for Iona however. The Patriots did some damage in their half of the first inning, scoring twice against Iona starter Alyssa DeJianne. George Mason loaded the bases with just one out, cashing in with a run on a single by Bozek. DeJianne punched out the next batter, but a bases-loaded walk brought home a second run.

After the Gaels were retired in order in the top of the second, the Patriots added to their lead. With two outs and two runners on, DeJianne allowed a double that scored a run. She struck out Bozek to strand two runners in scoring position.

Taylor walked to lead off the Gaels' half of the third inning and promptly swiped second base. Freshman Brianna Bailey drew a four-pitch walk to fill first base with one out, but the Patriots Carly Cooper got Jessica Chilcott to pop up and Meray to fly out to end the frame. DeJianne pitched a clean third inning, keeping the score 3-0 after three full innings.

George Mason scored a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Iona managed just two hits in that same span, singles from Sheeran and Collins, though they did not amount to any runs for the Maroon & Gold. Iona dropped game two to George Mason 6-0.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Zazzaro struck out 11 batters, starting the season strong. She registered double-digit punch-outs in six starts last season.
  • Iona's hits across the two games came from Meray (two), Capuano, Sheeran and Collins.
  • Samantha Rieb made her first career appearance in game two against George Mason, tossing two innings. She struck out two batters and allowed two runs.
  • Freshman Maddy Lowry also made the first appearance of her career in game two, pitching one inning and allowing a run on two hits.
