Iona Baseball Drops Afternoon Contest to Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, TN - The Iona College baseball program fell in game two of its weekend series against Tennessee, 29-0 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

GAME SUMMARY

Despite the loss, sophomore starter Blake Helmstetter struck out four batters in his four innings of work. Helmstetter recorded two strikeouts in the first inning getting the leadoff batter to go down swinging. After Tennessee scored two runs off an RBI single and double, Helstetter got the Gaels out of the first inning with his second strikeout.

In the top half of the second, grad student Vicente Mendoza recorded his second hit of the 2022 season, doubling to right center. The Vols managed to get out of the inning as starting pitcher Chase Dollander recorded one of his 10 strikeouts to get out of the inning.

On his next trip to the mound Helmstetter settled in, retiring Tennessee in order and in the top half of the third inning, freshman Anthony Febo singled for his first career collegiate hit for Iona. Febo would be stranded at first with Dollander striking out the side.

In the bottom half of the 3rd and 4th inning, Tennessee's bats came alive plating eight runs on seven hits extending the Vols lead to 10-0 through four innings of play. The runs continued for the home team as Tennessee scored four more runs in the 5th inning, and would then put together it's best offensive appearance scoring seven more runs in the sixth. Tennessee would go on to win by a final score of 29-0, to stay unbeaten on the young season.

Iona's other hit came off the bat from senior captain Jake Field who singled to center field in the 6th inning for his team leading sixth hit of the season. In relief for the Gaels in his lone inning of work sophomore Alex Hunt struck out a career-best three batters in his eighth inning appearance.

Iona will conclude their three-game series with Tennessee tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 PM from Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The game will be aired on SEC Network+ or WatchESPN.
