Iona Lacrosse Extends Winning Streak To Six Over Columbia

NEW YORK, NY - Iona women's lacrosse keeps their winning streak alive with a commanding victory over Columbia Wednesday afternoon, 21-13. Both Emily Stewart and Kira Varada scored five goals leading the Maroon & Gold offense.

GAME SUMMARY

Along with Stewart & Varada, Katherine Meyer netted her own hat trick. Seniors Leah Marshall, Gabriele Thornton, Kati Paavola, sophomore Alexa Maggiacomo each scored two goals and senior Emma Rippon extended her goal streak to five games.

Freshman Sofia Votto picked up her sixth straight win to begin her Iona career. In net she stopped seven Columbia shots and allowed only 11 goals. Freshman Caroline Scott entered her first college lacrosse game allowing two goals in the final five minutes of action.

As a team the Gaels assisted on 10 of the 21 goals and out shot the Lions, 42-27. Only 12 out of the 42 shots were off target. Leah Marshall had another staggering day with draw controls; she tallied 10 of the 23 Iona draw controls. Iona picked up 21 ground balls, with Varada notching four.

Stewart scored the first two goals for the Gaels, as Iona jumped to a two goal lead in the first seven minutes of action. Columbia got on the board a minute after Stewarts second goal and trimmed the Iona lead to one. Sofia Votto notched three saves in the first 11 minutes of the game. With 3:18 left in the first Emily Stewart went snipe city over the goalies head for third of the day and notching her hat trick.

Just seconds later the host team cut the lead back to one, 3-2. Thornton kept her scoring streak alive, a five-hole goal with 1:40 left in the first extended her streak to six straight games. A late second goal by Katherine Meyer in the first quarter gave Iona a 5-3 lead heading into the second quarter.

Columbia opened the second with an offensive opportunity but a great save by Votto kept them off the board. Wide open in front of the net Meyer capitalized with her second goal of the game and extended the lead to three. A turnover in the defensive zone allowed for Columbia to narrow the Iona lead back to two. Micaela Fiztpatrick finds another cutting Gael, this time it's Kira Varada who finds the back of the net, extending the lead to three.

Less than thirteen second apart Varada scored again forcing a timeout by Columbia with 9:27 left in the first half. Columbia answered with a free position goal to keep the game in striking range. Columbia does Iona one better with another goal just nine seconds after the last bringing the deficit to two goals. The Lions scored their third unanswered goal of the second quarter, trimming the Iona lead to one with 7:01 left in the first half. After Columbia tied the game up at 8-8, captain Leah Marshall nets her first of the day to give the lead back to the Gaels. The senior has now scored in all seven games for the Maroon & Gold.

With 3:26 left to play in the First half, Thornton runs from one end to the other and finds Maggiacomo in front of the net for the Gaels tenth goal of the game. Some big defensive stops on both sides kept the game scoreless over the last three minutes of play. Iona entered the half time break up 10-8.

Iona's offense came out hot to start the second half, Marshall netted her second of the day just 23 second into the third quarter. Kati Paavola cleans up an easy rebound for the Gaels and buries her first of the day. Iona's lead up to four with 12 minutes left in the third. The Gaels offense was on fire to start the quarter, rookie Kira Varada gets her hat trick of the day and extends the lead to five. Varada was not done with a hat trick, her fourth of the day extending the lead to 14-8 and forcing a Columbia timeout.

Emily Stewart was not going to let Kira be the only one with four goals, another Iona third quarter goal pushed the Iona lead to seven. With three second left in the quarter Columbia snuck one past Votto and made it a six goal game going into the final 15 minutes.

Starting the fourth quarter just like the third, this time Thornton puts one on the board 28 seconds in. Senior Megan Collins finds an open Maggiacomo for the Gaels 17 goal of the game with 13:54 left to play. Back to back goals by Varada and Paavola extended the Iona lead to 9 goals, the largest lead of the game. Everytime Varada gets one goal up on her, Stewart finds the back of the net yet again. Both Varada and Stewart with five goals each. Emma Rippon gets on the board for the first time today, she snuck one past the net minder for a short side goal.
