BROOKVILLE, NY - The Iona College Baseball team fell in their opening game of its weekend series against NEC foe LIU. The Sharks took advantage of big innings at the plate in the fourth and fifth inning as they wouldn't look back, winning by a final score of 14-4 at LIU Baseball Stadium.
Senior
Will Jennings launched his first career home-run to right field in the 7th inning, and senior
Jake Field tripled in a run in the 9th to lead the Gaels offensively.
GAME SUMMARY
The afternoon began with senior starting pitcher
Paul Sullivan working three scoreless innings to keep the game dead locked at 0. After a one-out double in the first inning, Sullivan escaped trouble with his lone strikeout and in the second inning Sullivan worked around a single, recording three straight ground outs. With LIU threatening again with a runner in scoring position, Sullivan got Luke Turner to line out to right field.
Unfortunately, Sullivan couldn't work himself out of another jam, with LIU scoring four runs in the fourth inning off two RBI singles. LIU's bats stayed hot in the following inning with Colin Adams hitting a three-run homer and the Sharks padded to their lead in the sixth inning with five more runs to open up a 13-0 lead.
Senior
Luca Lotito continued his hitting streak in the seventh inning, doubling to left center field setting up Jennings two-run blast to put the Gaels on the board. Lotito led off the ninth inning with a single, and came around to score on Field's RBI triple for his team leading 7th RBI on the season. Field came around to score on a passed ball to score the final run of the afternoon with Sharks winning game one of the series, 14-4.
