Iona SB Falls to Syracuse, Hofstra on Friday

HEMPSTEAD, NY - The Iona College softball team dropped a pair of contests to Syracuse and Hofstra on Friday at the Hofstra Invitational.

GAME ONE: SYRACUSE 2, IONA 1

Samantha Rieb took the ball for Iona in game one, retiring the Orange in order to breeze through her first inning of the afternoon. Jamie Sheeran provided instant offense for Iona, leading off the top of the second inning with a laser beam of a homer over the fence in right center.

Rieb continued mowing down Syracuse hitters, retiring the first 10 batters to face her before issuing a free pass with one out in the fourth. She managed her way through the rest of the frame unscathed.

Iona put two runners on courtesy of a pair of two-out walks in the top half of the fifth, but Haley Weaver was retired to end the threat. Rieb's no-hitter ended in the bottom of the frame after a Kelly Breen single to lead off the fifth. More importantly, Rieb managed to keep her shutout in tact, stranding a runner on third to send things to the sixth inning.

Back-to-back extra-base hits with one away in the sixth tied the game at 1-1 and put the Orange in a prime spot for more runs. In a bases-loaded jam, Rieb battled back from down 3-0 in the count to strike out Posner and end the inning.

The game needed extra innings after remaining tied after seven. Capuano began the eighth inning at second for Iona, moving up to third on a sacrifice bunt by Weaver. A foul out and a ground ball ended the frame and left the go-ahead run on third for Iona. Syracuse needed just one pitch in the bottom of the eighth to push the free runner across and win the game, 2-1.

GAME TWO: HOFSTRA 3, IONA 0

Kara Zazzaro started the second game for the Gaels, heading to the circle following a 1-2-3 top of the first. Zazzaro hit a batter, but made her way through the inning without any issue beyond that.

She faced some issues in the second inning however. Two errors in the field and a base on balls loaded the bases with no outs. A shallow fly ball resulted in the first out and kept the runners at bay for the moment. A single moved everyone up a base and made it 1-0 in favor of Hofstra. Zazzaro registered a second out at the expense of another run scoring on a fielder's choice. A single and then a walk pushed across one more run, but Zazzaro struck Sam Ward out looking to end the inning.

Trailing 3-0, Iona's offensive struggles continued. The Gaels would register their first hit in the fourth inning, but Kaylin Flukey's single would amount to nothing in the scoring column. A walk drawn by Morgan Ritchey and a single by Hannah Collins put two runners on with one out in the fifth. Brianna Bailey and Allie Taylor, representing the tying run at the plate, were both retired to strand a pair of runners.

Jessica Chilcott singled through the middle to begin the sixth inning for Iona, but the inning was over just two pitches later. A double play and a lineout got Hofstra through the top of the sixth. Annabella Pisapia finished what she started for the Pride, working around hits by Emma Capuano and Ritchey to finish the game and earn the victory for her squad.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Rieb and Zazzaro both worked complete games, ending up on the wrong side of the decision in both contests. Rieb allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and five walks, striking out two. Zazzaro went six innings, allowing three runs (zero earned) on four hits and three walks, striking out three.
  • Sheeran's third home run of the season in game one against Syracuse accounted for Iona's only run of the day.
  • Iona's other hits came from Haywood, Chilcott, Flukey, Capuano, Ritchey and Collins.
  • The loss to Syracuse was Iona's first of the season in extra innings. The Gaels had previously won their two contests that went past seven innings.

Iona wraps up play at the Hofstra Invitational on Sunday, facing Syracuse and Hofstra once more. First pitch between the Gaels and the Orange is set for 10:00 a.m. and at 3:00 p.m., the Gaels will face the Pride.
