Iona SB Swept on Final Day of Hofstra Invitational

HEMPSTEAD, NY - The Iona College softball team fell to both Syracuse and Hofstra on Sunday at the Hofstra Invitational, wrapping up non-conference tournament play for the season.

GAME ONE: SYRACUSE 4, IONA 3

For the second time in the weekend, Iona and Syracuse needed extra innings to decide a winner between the two. Today's nine-inning contest pitted Kara Zazzaro and Kaia Oliver against each other in the circle.

The Orange got after Zazzaro in the first, beginning with a double to left center by Angel Jasso. She moved up to third base on a passed ball, then scored on Kelly Breen's two-out single that squeaked by Morgan Ritchey at second base.

Iona's offense answered in the home half of the first, despite not recording a hit. Haley Weaver drew a walk, moved up to second on a wild pitch and then stole third with one out. Oliver struck out Emma Capuano for the second out, but her second wild pitch of the frame allowed Weaver to score and tie the game.

Zazzaro allowed a one-out base hit in the second, but notched her third, fourth and fifth strikeouts of the game to register a clean frame in the circle. Back-to-back two-out walks loaded the bases for the Gaels in the bottom of the second, forcing Oliver out of the contest. Lindsey Hendrix entered in relief in a tough spot, but got out of the inning after the umpire ruled that Weaver made contact with a pitch out of the batter's box.

Iona put a runner on in the first three innings of the game, but the Gaels' first hit of the afternoon did not come until the fourth frame. Natalia Meray led off the fourth with an infield single. Later in the frame, Brianna Bailey also notched an infield single, placing runners on first and second with two outs. Hannah Collins pinch hit for Weaver in an RBI opportunity, but Hendrix struck her out looking to get through the fourth and keep the score tied.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth. The Maroon & Gold loaded the bases with one out and Meray hit a sacrifice fly to center to push a run across and give Iona a 2-1 lead entering the latter portion of the contest.

Iona's lead did not last long however; the Orange capitalized on another two-out run-scoring opportunity in the sixth inning. Freshman Taylor Posner stroked a pinch-hit double over Jessica Chilcott's head in center, scoring Laila Alves all the way from first to make it 2-2.

The game would head to extra innings and despite having a runner begin each half inning at second base, neither offense could gain an edge in the scoring column. It took until the top of the ninth inning when the Orange's Olivia Pess sent a ball over the fence in left to put the Gaels in a 4-2 hole.

Jamie Sheeran hit a one-out double down the left-field line in the bottom of the ninth to plate a run, but the Gaels would strand the potential game-tying run at third base to end the first game of the day.

GAME TWO: HOFSTRA 6, IONA 1

Alyssa DeJianne drew the start in the final game of the weekend, working just the first inning for Iona. Hofstra started things with a bunt single and a sacrifice. The runner moved up to third by virtue of a stolen base and scored on an error in the outfield. Back-to-back doubles put DeJianne and the Maroon & Gold in an early 3-0 hole.

The Pride started the second inning with a leadoff double, chasing DeJianne early. Samantha Rieb relieved her, allowing her inherited runner to score on a single. She would escape the inning without any further damage.

Trailing by four runs, the Gael offense struggled to get anything going against Hailey Venturini. Back-to-back one-out singles by Meray and Ritchey put two runners on, but Venturini induced a ground-ball double-play to erase the threat. Iona would get on the board in the next inning thanks to a throwing error by Venturini. Emma Capuano started things with a single, eventually coming around to score from second after Venturini's error on the ball put in play by Brianna Bailey.

Iona cut the deficit to 4-1, but saw its disadvantage in the scoring column grow to five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Hofstra's Venturini would close things out in the seventh to hand Iona a loss in the final game of the weekend tournament.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Zazzaro threw a season-high nine innings in the first game of the day, her seventh complete game of the year. Zazzaro struck out 10 batters, the fourth time she has reached double-digit strikeouts.
  • Sheeran registered her team-leading fourth multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a run batted in against Syracuse. Meray's two-hit effort against Hofstra was her second of the season.
  • Chilcott and Capuano joined Meray as the only other Gaels to register hits in both contests today.
  • Rieb worked five innings in relief in game two, allowing two runs (zero earned) and lowering her earned run average to a team-low 2.03.
