Iona Baseball Drops Road Contest to FDU on Tuesday

TEANECK, NJ - Continuing its non-conference portion of the schedule, the Iona College Baseball program fell in a road contest to Fairleigh Dickson by a final score of 16-1 at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

GAME SUMMARY

A leadoff double from senior Nick Carnevale got Iona going to start the afternoon and after a single from senior Jake Field, the Gaels quickly had runners in scoring position. This setup an RBI opportunity for junior Nick Forney who delivered on a fielder's choice to bring in Carnevale for the game's first run. Forney's first inning RBI was his fourth on the season, also marking the fourth time on the year the Gaels have scored in the first inning.

FDU quickly answered, scoring four runs off an RBI single from Justin Sierra and a two-run homer from Luke Cantwell. With the Knights looking for more with the bases loaded, Iona starter grad-student Vicente Mendoza, managed to escape further damage picking up a strikeout and a fly-out to end the inning.

FDU tacked on another run in the second and entering the third inning, sophomore Alex Hunt came in relief for the Gaels, immediately making an impact striking out the side. In his three innings of work, Hunt recorded a career-high four strikeouts while only allowing two hits.

Making his season debut for the Maroon & Gold, sophomore Chris Mariani picked up a single in the fifth inning, but a double play helped FDU get out of the inning.

Fairleigh Dickinson put together their best innings in the later stages of the game, scoring six runs off five hits in the sixth, and followed up with a four run seventh inning to open up a 16-1 lead, eventually being the final score at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

The non-conference series will continue next month when the two teams meet again on April 6th at 3:00 PM.
