Long Island, NY - The Iona College Baseball program fell in their second meeting of the season to Stony Brook by a final score 10-0, at Joe Nathan Field on Wednesday afternoon.Â
GAME SUMMARY
Freshman
Joey Kasper made his first career start for the Gaels, holding Stony Brooks scoreless through the games first two innings while picking up a pair of strikeouts. The Seawolves got on the board in the third inning and with runners on first and second Stony Brook had a chance to extend the inning but Kasper buckled down and picked up his third strikeout.
Leading 1-0, Stony Brook added some separation in the fourth inning with a two-run RBI double but junior
Thomas O'Sullivan making his third appearance in four games out of the bullpen for the Gaels, got an inning ending groundout to keep the game at 3-0.

Nick Forney led off the fifth with a single and aggressive baserunning saw him at second, but two strikeouts from Stony Brook's starting pitcher Josh O'Neill, kept the Gaels off the board. Iona had another opportunity in the sixth inning after senior
Will Jennings doubled to right field and after sophomore
Chris Mariani reached base on a HBP but Andrew Ledbetter working out of the bullpen for the Seawolves managed to get out of the jam.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Stony Brook added some insurance runs after another a two-run RBI double from Matt Brown-Eiring, pushing the lead to 5-0 in favor of the home team. Brown-Eiring would be stranded at second after freshman
Matt Zguro recorded three straight outs to get Iona out of the inning.
Stony Brook tacked on an additional run in the seventh and four more runs in the eighth inning, to turn the tide on their way to a 10-0 victory to sweep the two game non-conference series.Â
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Jennings and Forney both had multi-hit days; Forney has now three games of two hits or more this season.
- Jennings has recorded a hit in nine out of the last 10 games for the Maroon & Gold.
- Batting cleanup and starting at catcher, Mariani picked up a single as the sophomore has a hit in each of his three starts.
- Senior Nick Carnevale leadoff single puts him at 17 hits on the season, (2nd best) and brings his average to .254 (2nd best).
- Sophomore Alex Hunt worked a scoreless inning out of the pen for the Gaels in the fifth inning. Hunt's 14 strikeouts puts him only behind O'Sullivan (17) for most K's out of the bullpen.
UP NEXT
The Gaels will get back to MAAC play this weekend, for a three-game road series against Preseason coaches poll favorites, Monmouth. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday April 1st, at 3:00 PM.
