PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Iona College baseball team dropped its non-conference road matchup to #8 ranked Rutgers, losing by a final score of 19-1. Playing for the first time since the 2019 season, the Scarlet Knights managed to hold the Gaels to only two hits with
Nick Carnevale leading off the game with a single and a double from
Will Jennings, marking the only two hits.
Carnevale's leadoff single, brings him up to 32 hits on the season, tying
Nick Forney for most on the team currently this season.
GAME SUMMARY
 Rutgers who came in winners of 15 straight and unbeaten at home, got off to a quick start. The Scarlet Knights, out of the Big Ten, scored three runs in the opening inning followed by 11 runs in the second to jump out to a 14-0 lead.Â
Between the third and fourth inning, Rutgers tacked on getting single runs but
Matt Zguro kept it there, getting help from his defense, with the infield turning back-to-back inning ending double-plays.
Alex Hunt followed Zguro with a strong fifth inning outing, picking up two strikeouts on his way to a scoreless frame.
Eric Gialloreto came in for Hunt and tossed two scoreless innings himself, retiring six of the seven batters he faced in the sixth and in the seventh. Hunt and Zguro are currently tied for second most strikeouts out of the freshman pitchers, with 15 each.
The Gaels lone run came in the seventh inning, with
Anthony Febo coming around to score after Carnevale reached base on an error. Febo came around to score for the second time of his career after reaching base on a one-out walk.Â
 Rutgers drove in three more runs in the home half of the eighth inning enroute to picking up the win in the midweek matchup, 19-1 on Tuesday Afternoon.Â

The Gaels will gear up for another MAAC weekend series as they'll welcome in the Bobcats of Quinnipiac at City Park. Game one is scheduled for Friday April 22nd, at 3:00 PM.
