Iona Lacrosse's Comeback Ends Up Short At Canisius

BUFFALO, NY - Iona women's lacrosse teams come back in the fourth quarter comes up short as the Gaels fall to the Golden Griffs 17-15. Iona falls to 7-4 on the season and 0-3 in conference play. The offensive side for the Maroon & Gold were led by Kira Varada and Emilly Stewart who combined for nine goals. Senior Katherine Meyer nabbed two goals and Alexa Skubas, Kati Paavola, Amber Brewster, and Alexa Maggiacomo added one each.     

GAME SUMMARY

Canisius opened the scoring at the 12:30 mark in the first quarter, another goal by the host team a couple minutes later had the Gaels down two early. Kira Varada found the back of the net for Iona's first of the day and her 28th of the year. Just over a minute later and 7:13 later Varada scored again and knotted things up at 2-2. 

Varada was on first in the first quarter scoring her third straight unanswered goal giving Iona a 3-2 lead. Alexa Maggiacomo scored her lone goal late in the opening quarter, assisted by senior Megan Collins. Iona entered the second frame with a two goal lead. 

Emily Stewart notched her 30th of the season, opening the scoring in the second quarter. Two straight goals by the Golden Griffs trimmed the Iona lead to 5-4 with 8:43 left in the first half. Iona answered quickly with two goals of their own to regain the three goal lead. 

Canisius went on a 3 goal run over a two minute span to tie the game back up at 7-7 for the first tie since 2-2 early in the first quarter. Both teams would score two more goals each over the last 3 minutes, as the game entered the halftime break 9-9. 

The Gaels struggled in the third period, Iona's lone goal of the third came off the stick of Emily Stewart on a free position in the first 30 seconds of the quarter. From 12:37 in the third to 7:57 in the fourth Canisius scored seven straight goals, taking a 16-10 lead. 

The Gaels didn't quit, scoring five goals over the last seven minutes, but time ran out as Iona was unable to complete the comeback with the Golden Griffs taking the game 17-15. As a team, the Maroon & Gold picked up 17 ground balls, caused 5 turnovers, and controlled 16 draws.
