NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse program falls to 0-4 in conference play after dropping the Wednesday afternoon contest 17-12 against Monmouth. Iona was led on offense by freshman
Alyssa Castellano with three goals on three shots. Senior
Megan Collins dished out a team high four hits, and notched one goal for a team high 5 points.Â
Gabriele Thornton, Kati Paavola, and Amber Brewster all scored two goals each, while Alexa Maggiacomo, Megan Collins, and Emily Stewart found the back of the net once each.
Sofia Votto started in net for the Maroon & Gold, making 13 saves and allowing 13 goals in 47 minutes. Sophomore Paige Ghilani played the other 13 minutes allowing four goals and made two saves. Thornton and Castellano combined for 9 of the 16 Iona draw controls.      Â
GAME SUMMARY
The Hawks opened the scoring in the first minute of the game. They continued with the socirng taking a 2-0 lead with 12:27 left on the clock. Collins found a cutting Maggiacomo to get the Gaels on the board. Two minutes later Thornton notched her 20th of the year and knotted things up at 2-2.Â
Monmouth scored their third goal three minutes later, taking a one goal lead. Iona answered not even 40 seconds later off the stick of Castellano. Monmouth snuck one past Votto late in the first quarter, taking a 4-3 lead in the second 15 minutes.
Thornton started the scoring in the second quarter, after the Gaels tied it up at 4-4, the visitors went on a three goal run, taking a 7-4 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half. Over the last five minutes of the first half and the first three minutes of the second half the Gaels went on their own three goal run and knotted things back up at 7-7.Â
Monmouth's offense closed out the third quarter with five unanswered goals. The fourth quarter started 12-7 in favor of the Hawks. Goals by Collins, Stewart, Castellano, and two by Brewster got the Maroon & Gold within two goals with five minutes left to play. Three goals by Monmouth in the last three minutes sealed the deal and took the victory ,17-12.    Â
