WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - The Iona College Baseball team came up short in its series finale to Monmouth losing by a final score of 6-4, in a back and forth contest. Just like the first two games of the series it was Iona getting on the board first, but ultimately Monmouth's two runs in the eighth inning proved to be the difference in the ball game.
GAME SUMMARY
With runners on the corners and two-outs in the opening inning, senior
Brad Polinsky got the Gaels offense going with a two-run RBI double to right center, putting Iona up 2-0. Polinsky got the Maroon & Gold on the board in the first inning with a two-run RBI single back in Friday's contest. The score would stay the same after one inning of play, as freshman
Joey Kasper retired the Hawks in order to begin his afternoon.Â
Monmouth however managed to get three runs back in the following inning using four consecutive hits including a two-run RBI double and RBI single to put the home team back in front 3-2, after two innings of play.Â
Kasper picked up two straight inning ending strikeouts with a runner on third both in both situations, to keep the score at 3-2. After a leadoff homer from Monmouth's James Harmstead, but Kasper settled back in, retiring the final three batters he faced in the afternoon and keeping the game a two run deficit.Â
The Gaels managed to get a run back in the top of the sixth after junior
Nick Forney came around to score with two-outs on a throwing error that allowed senior
Luca Lotito to reach second.Â
Trailing 4-3 in the eighth inning, Iona put together a late game rally that started with sophomore
Jaz Burton drawing a walk. Burton advanced to second on a sac-bunt from senior
Nick Carnevale and once again it was Forney delivering with a single to put runners on the corners. Iona took advantage of a walk that loaded up the bases and pinch hitter sophomore
Chris Mariani, would get credited with the tying RBI after getting hit by a pitch, making it 4-4.
Monmouth however answered in the bottom half of the inning, with the go-ahead hit coming off the bat of Jay Bant on an RBI single. Harmstead provided the Hawks with some insurance following an RBI single, putting the home team in front 6-4 after eight innings of play.
Looking for some ninth inning magic like yesterday's game, the Gaels put the tying runners on base but Monmouth prevailed, getting a strikeout to win 6-4, and sweep the hard fought series.Â
