POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College baseball team dropped game two of its three-game series to Marist 24-1, on Saturday afternoon from McCann Baseball Field.
Jake Field drove in Iona's lone run of the game with an RBI double, extending his streak to six straight games recording an RBI.
GAME SUMMARY
Similar to game one the series, Marist got on the board first with a two-run first inning homer from Robbie Armitage.
Drew Helmstetter recovered in the second, striking out two while facing the minimum and also went on to pitch a scoreless third inning to keep the deficit at two runs.
The Red Foxes tacked on for two more runs in the fourth on a two-run RBI double from Dylan Hoy to make it 4-0. With nobody out in the inning Hoy would be stranded on second as Helmstetter retired three straight hitters with one coming on his third and final strikeout of the afternoon. Helmstetter afternoon finished after six innings of work making it the third straight start where the lefty has worked six complete innings or more.
Marist put together its biggest inning at the plate in the seventh against the Gaels bullpen, scoring 16 runs off of nine hits to open up the ball game.Â
Iona managed to get a run back in eighth after
Nick Forney tripled to right center and with two-outs Field brought Forney in on his RBI double for his team leading 18th run batted in. Forney's two hits on the day, brings him now to 40 on the season, which currently is best on the team. Rounding out the Gaels offense,
Will Jennings and
Jim Kemp each picked up hits in the loss.
Marist managed to add two more runs in the eighth before retiring Iona in order in the ninth to take the ball game by a final score of 24-1 from McCann Baseball Field.Â
