BUFFALO, NY - The Iona College baseball team fell in its second game of their conference road series to Canisius by a final score of, 13-3 on Saturday afternoon. Iona managed to take an early 1-0 lead but the Griffs used a combined nine runs in the sixth and seventh inning to pull away at the Demske Sports Complex.
GAME SUMMARY
In no surprise, senior
Nick Carnevale led the game off with a single through the left side and junior
Nick Forney followed up with a single of his own, giving Iona an early scoring opportunity. Continuing to pass it down the line, senior's
Will Jennings and
Jake Field did their job of moving over the runners and on a pass ball Forney came in to score from third base for the game's first run. Forney's run marks it the fourth time and in the Gaels last six contests that they've scored a run in the opening inning.
Canisius managed to tie the game in their first plate appearance and with runners on second and third the Griffs had a chance to take the lead but freshman
Joey Kasper recorded an inning ending groundout. Kasper picked up a strikeout to end the second inning but not before Canisius scored two runs on a home-run and an RBI single to take a 3-1 lead through two innings of play.
Kasper ended his afternoon strong, retiring the side in the home half of the third inning and followed up with a scoreless fourth inning, keeping the deficit at two runs. Kasper's 96 pitches during his four innings of work, are the most he's thrown in a game so far and in his career.
With the score still 3-1, Canisius's Mike Steffan hit the Griffs second grand slam in as many days and in the ensuing inning Canisius tacked on five more runs off four hits to open up the game, taking a 12-1 advantage.Â
Trailing 13-1 entering the ninth, the Gaels put together its best inning at the plate since the first, which started with Field and sophomore
Chris Mariani reaching base on a walk and HBP. One day off his four RBI performance, senior
Luca Lotito continued to stay hot, bringing in Field on an RBI single for his fifth RBI in two games. Mariani came across to score Iona's final run on a wild pitch but Canisius picked up a game-ending strikeout to win game two of this series, 13-3.
