QUEENS, NY - The Iona College baseball team dropped their final non-conference matchup of the season, falling to St. Johns 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon. The Gaels two runs came from a sac-fly off the bat of
Will Jennings and an RBI double from
Brad Polinsky at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
GAME SUMMARY
After a scoreless first inning on both sides, the Gaels managed to get on the board in the second.
Brad Polinsky put himself in scoring position with a leadoff double and after advancing to third base, Jennings drove him in with a sac-fly to right field for team leading 21st RBI on the year.
After keeping the Red Storm off the board in the opening inning,
Blake Helmstetter tossed a scoreless second, working around a two-out single. With Iona still leading 1-0, St. Johns managed to even the score in the third, on an RBI single from Tate Ballestero. Helmstetter recovered, getting an inning-ending fly-out to conclude his three-inning outing on the mound.
The Johnnies had their best inning of the game in the fourth, scoring four runs off of a two-run single and two-run double from Kevin Michaels and Ballestero again. Leading 5-1, St. Johns added an additional run in the fifth on a single, but Polinsky's defense kept it at only a run, throwing out his 11th runner of the season from behind the plate.
Matt Zguro was Iona's fourth pitcher of the game and the freshman worked quickly, retiring St. Johns in order while picking up a strikeout in his lone inning of work. St. Johns placed home three more runs in the seventh inning, creating more separation from the Gaels as the home team led 9-1 after seven.
After
Alex Hunt pitched a scoreless inning in the eighth, Iona got another run in their last plate appearance. With one out in the ninth,
Nick Forney lined his second single of the game and Polinsky followed up continuing his strong game on both sides of the plate, with an RBI ground-rule double.
Jim Kemp followed up with a single to put runners on the corners but the Gaels rally attempt ended there as St. Johns took the contest 9-2 to sweep the two-game series.
