PELHAM, NY - Iona College women's rowing head coach
John Boyd has been named head coach of the men's and women's summer rowing programs at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC).
Â
One of the premier rowing clubs in the United States, the NYAC has produced hundreds of national championship crews and dozens of Team USA athletes and coaches in its 154-year history.
Boyds Comments
"I'm so excited to re-join the NYAC this summer," said Boyd. "Twenty years ago when I was on my first summer team as an athlete I would have thought you were crazy if you told me that one day I'd coach the team. I was barely qualified to row in the same boats as those guys as I wasn't too far removed from my novice year. All I had to offer at the time was a reasonable erg score, which was enough to open the door."
Â
Once through the door Boyd found success in his five-year career, winning medals at the national championships in both sweeping and sculling. The focus of the summer program year-to-year is to win medals at the national championships and to contend for the team points trophy. This year's crop of athletes promise to be contenders again in 2022.
Â
As an athlete, Boyd joined the long history, but exclusive list, of rowers from Iona who made the jump to the NYAC. Now, as an Iona coach, he joins a small group of former Iona coaches or alums who have led the summer programs:
Tom Dougherty led the women's program for a few summers and alum Kevin Murphy led the men's program for over a decade. Most famously are alums Joe Caminiti and Vincent Ventura who led the program for several decades.
Â
The 2022 National Championship Regatta will be held on Mercer Lake from July 6-9.
