Iona WSOC Plays to Scoreless Draw to Open 2022 Campaign

WORCESTER, MA - The Iona University women's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a scoreless draw on the road at Holy Cross. Emma Havrilla made five stops in goal to earn the first clean sheet of the season for the Gaels.

MATCH SUMMARY

The two sides played a physical first half, seeing 11 combined fouls. Holy Cross owned a stark advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, though Iona had four corners compared to just one for the Crusaders. Two of the Crusaders' seven shots made it on net and Havrilla stopped both. Samantha Hogan and Gabby Dellocono were responsible for Iona's two shots and the Holy Cross keeper Olivia Dubin made a stop on Dellcono's try.

The Maroon & Gold outshot the Crusaders in the second half, 7-5. There was not much towards the net early on after the halftime break, but action picked up down the stretch. Five of Iona's final seven shots came in the last nine minutes of action. The Gaels controlled the majority of the waning moments of the match, with their best chances of the evening coming in the 82nd minute.

Iona had a pair of corners, taking one from each side of the pitch less than a minute apart. The initial corner resulted in a header that was stopped by a defender at the goal line and Hogan's volley with her foot that followed was stopped, leading to another corner. The ball was served toward the far post, finding the head of Kate McNally behind the scrum of bodies in the box, but Dubin deflected it away with her fingertips and cleared the danger. The match ended with a long try by Victoria Mule that was easily corralled by Dubin as the horn sounded.
