NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon against Seton Hall, 1-0, at Mazzella Field. The Gaels held statistical advantages in shots (14-4) and shots on goal (6-2), but the Pirates' 73rd minute goal proved to be the difference on Sunday.
MATCH SUMMARY
Iona's defense played a solid first half, limiting Seton Hall to just two shots in the opening 45 minutes. Emma Havrilla made a save on the only shot attempt sent her direction, a header in the sixth minute. The Gaels had plenty of first-half opportunities, but all six shot attempts were withstood by the Seton Hall defense. The match was scoreless headed to the half, and remained that way until the 73rd minute.
A corner kick for Seton Hall led to a clearance by Iona, but a cross sent back in deflected off of the crossbar and was then volleyed into the back of the net by Abbie Roberts. After six shots in the first half, Iona managed eight more in half number two, but none were true enough to find twine and eventually the Maroon & Gold fell to the Pirates.
