Iona WSOC Shutout by Seton Hall in First Loss of 2022 Season

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon against Seton Hall, 1-0, at Mazzella Field. The Gaels held statistical advantages in shots (14-4) and shots on goal (6-2), but the Pirates' 73rd minute goal proved to be the difference on Sunday.

MATCH SUMMARY

Iona's defense played a solid first half, limiting Seton Hall to just two shots in the opening 45 minutes. Emma Havrilla made a save on the only shot attempt sent her direction, a header in the sixth minute. The Gaels had plenty of first-half opportunities, but all six shot attempts were withstood by the Seton Hall defense. The match was scoreless headed to the half, and remained that way until the 73rd minute.

A corner kick for Seton Hall led to a clearance by Iona, but a cross sent back in deflected off of the crossbar and was then volleyed into the back of the net by Abbie Roberts. After six shots in the first half, Iona managed eight more in half number two, but none were true enough to find twine and eventually the Maroon & Gold fell to the Pirates.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona's loss was its first of the season after opening the season with two draws and five consecutive victories. The Gaels fall to 0-5-1 all-time against Seton Hall and the Maroon & Gold have now lost three straight at the hands of the Big East foe.
  • The Gaels held the edge in shots (14-4) and shots on goal (6-2), but could not find the back of the net for the first time since their season-opening draw on the road at Holy Cross.
  • Havrilla faced just four shots on the afternoon, saving one of the two that were on goal.

UP NEXT

Iona hosts Army on Wednesday, September 14 to close out non-conference play. The Gaels welcome the Black Knights to Mazzella Field for a 3:00 p.m. start. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
