NEW ROCHELLE, NY - A strong second half for Rider led to a stunning 70-67 loss for the Iona University men's basketball team in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Hynes Center. The Broncs erased an 18-point second half deficit to hand the Gaels' their first loss at home in their last 22 games.
THE RUNDOWN
Iona built an early double-digit advantage following an 11-1 run that concluded with a
Berrick JeanLouis layup at 9:23. The Gaels led by as many as 15 in the frame when JeanLouis converted a conventional three-point play with under two minutes to play. The Maroon & Gold took a 12-point lead into the intermission, 40-28.

The Gaels had an auspicious start to the second, connecting on three straight three pointers in the midst of a 9-3 run to start the half.
Daniss Jenkins' second three-ball with 17:31 on the clock gave Iona a 49-31 advantage. It would be Iona's last field goal for the next 4:43. Over the next 10 minutes, Rider outscored the home team 23-5 and knotted the score at 54-54 with 7:39 to play. With the score tied at 67, the Broncs' Dwight Murray converted a three-pointer with less than four seconds to play to earn the win for the visitors. After shooting 18-for-35 (51.4%) in the first 23:29, the Gaels were just 5-for-23 (21.7%) in the decisive final 16 minutes. After connecting on just one of its first nine three-point attempts, Rider hit its final five in the last 11:22 of the contest.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Junior Nelly Junior Joseph posted a team-high 18 points and 13 rebounds. He also added four blocks and a steal. Junior Joseph became the first Iona player since Mike Glover in November/December 2010 to have six double-doubles, a span of 12 seasons.
- JeanLouis stuffed the stat sheet at home for the second straight game, posting 13 points, a career-high nine assists, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
- Jenkins added 16 points, three rebounds and three assists with 13 points coming in the second half.
- Rookie Cruz Davis chipped in 10 points with three rebounds and three steals in the loss.
THE OPPONENT
- Murray led all scorers with 22 points. He Had six rebounds and four assists with six turnovers in 39 minutes.
- Mervin James added 15 points and six rebounds for the Broncs.
- Adetokunbo Bakare scored all nine of his points during his team's decisive run, connecting on all three three-point attempts in the final 20 minutes.
TEAM STATS
- Rider outshot Iona 46.6%-39.7%. It shot 62.5% in the second half.
- The Gaels held a 37-34 advantage on the boards including 17-7 on second chance points.
- Iona had 16 assists and 11 turnovers while Rider had 17 and 14.
- The Maroon & Gold recorded 12 blocks in the contest, its third game in double-figures in the statistic.
- The key stat in the loss for the Gaels was a 16-for-28 (57.1%) performance from the charity stripe. The Broncs were 10-for-14 (71.4%).

Iona is back in action next Friday when they travel the 10 miles Southwest to face archival Manhattan in Riverdale. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at Draddy Gymnasium in the Gaels lone contest of the week.
