Iona MBB Gets Back On Track On The Road With Overtime Win At Manhattan

RIVERDALE, NY - The Iona University men's basketball team withstood a frenetic second half comeback attempt by Manhattan in an 84-76 overtime win on the road in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Draddy Gym. All five starters scored in double-figures for the Gaels led by 21 points from sophomore Walter Clayton Jr.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Clayton Jr. shot 8-of-17 with two three-pointers and a 3-for-3 effort from the line to account for his 21 points.  He added six rebounds, six assists and four steals in 40 minutes of action. Clayton missed three of the previous four full games with an injury and was limited to 16 minutes in his last appearance vs. Rider.
  • Berrick JeanLouis posted 18 points, and stuffed the stat sheet with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in 33 minutes.
  • Nelly Junior Joseph recorded his seventh straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  He played 27 of the 45 minutes due to foul issues.
  • Daniss Jenkins added 14 points. He made up for a rough shooting night by posting seven rebounds, six assists and two steals with just one turnover in 44 minutes.
  • Osborn Shema had 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks.  The seven-foot post player stepped out and hit two clutch three pointers for the Gaels down the stretch.

THE OPPONENT

  • The Jaspers also had five double-digit scorers led by Samir Stewart's 18.
  • Ant Nelson had 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists but was just 3-for-17 from the field.
  • Josh Roberts had nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

TEAM STATISTICS

  • Iona outshot Manhattan 40.5%-37.7%. The Gaels were 5-of-7 (71.4%) in the overtime period while limiting the Jaspers to 3-for-10 (30.0%) in the final five minutes.
  • Manhattan held a 48-46 advantage on the boards, but Iona led 13-10 in second chance points and recorded 21 offensive boards.
  • The Gaels had 19 assists and 11 turnovers while the Jaspers had 13 and 15.  Despite four less giveaways Iona trailed 17-16 in points off the turnovers.
  • The Maroon & Gold held a significant advantage inside, outscoring their opponent 52-38 in the paint.
