Iona WSOC Draws in MAAC Play Against Rider

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University women's soccer team continued Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon with a 1-1 draw versus Rider at Mazzella Field. Senior midfielder Emily Drake tallied her first goal of the season with a penalty kick late in the second half.

The first half was a balanced effort from both teams with the Broncs holding a slight 9-6 edge on shots. The Gaels gained momentum as the second half built up, with Drake spliting two defenders driving into the 18-yard box, before getting fouled by the Broncs' Morgan Bethie to earn a penalty kick opportunity.

Drake, nailed the penalty kick to the back right corner of the net to give Iona a 1-0 lead in the 76 minute. With under two minutes to play in the contest, the opposing team countered as Chloe Fisher found Ava Ferrie on a breakaway to tie the contest at one apiece in the 88 minute.

Iona held a 19-12 shot advantage, with 13 shots coming in the second half. Graduate student Samantha Hogan led the team with five shots including four on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Savannah Rogers made five saves for the Maroon & Gold.

The Gaels will return to MAAC action on the road at Saint Peter's on Saturday (October 14) with a noon kick off. The Maroon & Gold will return home next Wednesday (October 18) for MAAC play against Marist.
